Et voila, après 2 semaines de hard work, on est parti pour présenter le fruit résultant de notre travail en groupes mixed d’étudiants marocains et néerlandais. On est arrivé à Casablanca, à l’hôtel Hyatt Regency vers 12h. On a prépare la salle de séminaire en affichant nos posters. A 1h, on est parti pour prendre le déjeuner, il nous reste qu’un petit moment en fin de commencer le séminaire, tout stressés, on en pourrait rien faire, c’est normale.

Et c’est parti ! Monsieur Jan ouvre l’après-midi par une présentation sur NIMAR (Institut néerlandais au Maroc) en parlant de l’échange culturel entre les hollandais et les marocains. Puis Madame Ewa Wietsma nous a montré la situation de l’université de Wageningen sur le thème de la gestion d’eau. Elle a parlé des études disponibles et le budget correspondant concernant le sujet de l’eau a son université.

Ensuite, professor Larabi a traité l’état de ressources en eau au Maroc et monsieur Rick a présenté la problématique du changement climatique et les solution visées par les chercheurs scientifiques. Finalement, monsieur Jaaits de ONEP a fait une présentation sur la gestion intégrée de ressources en eau au Maroc.

Un petit moment de relax dans le salon et on a repris le séminaire. Nous, les groupes, présentent nos solutions innovatrices pour les cas dans le domaine de la gestion de l’eau au Maroc visités et étudiés pendant les 7 derniers jours avec les collègues de Pays Bas. Après le jugement de membres de jury, monsieur Rick nous a félicités et il a distribué les attestations.

Tout est bien passé et j’aimerai bien que ca va être le premier pas pour nos recherches scientifiques et pour une collaboration intensive et durables entre les universités de Pays Bas et du Maroc.

Eindelijk is het zover, 5 oktober, de dag waar we de afgelopen week met zijn allen naartoe gewerkt hebben. Want naast alle gezelligheids activiteiten die we de afgelopen dagen gedaan hebben om elkaar en de Marokkaanse studenten beter te leren kennen, hebben we ook heel hard aan onze cases gewerkt. Het resultaat mag er zijn, elke groep heeft in drie dagen tijd een hele professionele poster in elkaar weten te zetten om hun creative oplossing te presenteren.

’s Ochtends om kwart voor negen verlaten we het voor onze thuisbasis in Rabat. Een ontroerend afscheid want voor de Nederlanders is het nog maar zeer de vraag of we hier ooit weer eens zullen wederkeren. Deze gemoedelijke stad heeft ons de afgelopen dagen onderdak geboden, maar nu moeten we echt op weg naar het ons vreemde Casablanca.

Twee Nederlanders, een Zuid-Afrikaanse en een Marokkaanse dienen zich aan om de eindresultaten te presenteren. In de zaal zitten een aantal zeer belangrijke mensen zoals de baas van ONEP, belangrijke professors van onder andere de “Ecole Mohammedia d’Ingenieurs” (EMI) en de Hogeschool Rotterdam (hro) en de consul van Casablanca. Bij sommigen van ons was de spanning zelfs zo hoog opgelopen dat we afgelopen nacht slecht konden slapen, als dat maar goed gaat. Maar eerst tijd voor een hele luxe lunch en daarna wordt de middag geopend door de professoren van de EMI, de hro en de universiteit van Wageningen. Om 4 uur is het dan eindelijk zover, de presentaties beginnen. Elke groep krijgt enkele minuten om hun presentatie te presenteren, daarna is er 10 minuten tijd om vragen te stellen. Na afloop van de presentaties is de consul van Casablanca blijkbaar zo onder de indruk dat hij ons uitnodigt om een ondertekening van een verdrag tussen Marokko en Nederland bij te wonen. We krijgen zelfs de kans om de posters in de B2B room te presenteren aan de aanwezige zakenlui. Een aantrekkelijk aanbod die we natuurlijk meteen aangrijpen, zeker omdat de zaal op dit moment goed gevuld is vanwege de aanstaande ondertekening. Helaas konden niet alle posters gepresenteerd worden, want de minister van industrie en nieuwe technologie (Ahmed Reda CHAMI) komt eraan en het reguliere programma moet hervat worden.

’s Avonds staat er een groot diner gepland. Voor een van Marokkaanse studenten zit het project er alweer op, zij heeft de komende dagen verplichtingen aan de universiteit. Helaas moeten we afscheid nemen van Maha EL MOUHIDI, die de afgelopen dagen hard met haar groep heeft gewerkt aan het project. Een leuke draai aan de avond is dat later een aantal van de Marokkaanse studenten besluit ons te komen vergezellen in Marrakech. De stad waar wij Nederlandse studenten vanaf overmorgen het project in een relaxte sfeer af gaan sluiten.

Finally, it is the 5th of October, the day we have all been working for. Because aside of all the social activities we undertook the last few days to build this amazing team of Dutch and Moroccan students, we have also been working very hard on our cases. The results of our efforts are very clear, every group has managed to create a very professional looking poster in the relative short time of three days available to us. These posters will be used today to present our solutions at the seminar in Casablanca.

At a quarter to nine in the morning we leave our hotel in Rabat. A moving farewell, because for most of us Dutch students chances are we will never return to this beautiful city. This lovely city has harboured us very courageously the past few days, but now we really have to leave for the rugged city of Casablanca.

Two Dutchmen, one South-African and one Moroccan student have signed up to present our end results. The room is filled with some very important persons, like the big boss of ONEP, important professors of the “Ecole Mohammedia d’Ingenieurs” (EMI) and the Hogeschool Rotterdam (hro) and the consul van Casablanca. For some of us the tension was so high they had difficulties to sleep last night. But first it is time for a very luxurious lunch and the opening of our part of the seminar by professors of the EMI, the hro and the Wageningen University. 4 o’clock arrives, time for the presentations. Every group has a few minutes to pitch their solution followed by 10 minutes to ask questions. After the presentations the consul of Casablanca is so impressed that he invites to the signing of an agreement between Morocco and the Netherlands, we get the chance to present our posters in the B2B room. A very attractive opportunity we do not hesitate to take, especially since the room is filled with important business people waiting for the signing. Sadly not all of our posters could be shown because the minister of industry and new technology (Ahmed Reda CHAMI) arrived and the signing (obviously) has priority over our pitches.

In the evening dinner is planned. For one of the Moroccan students the project is finished with this day, she has other obligations. So sadly we have to part way of Maha EL MOUHIDI, the past few days she has been working very hard with her teammates. Later that night some Moroccan students decide that they will join us in Marrakech. The city where we Dutch students will conclude this project the next few days.

“Het voelt zo lekker om je lekker te voelen!”

Na zeven dagen in het prachtige Marokko, begint de werkdruk toe te slaan. Het moment van kennis maken is voorbij en de tijd voor het inleveren van het eindproduct is bijna aangebroken. Er is slechts 1 dag over voor het maken van een kwalitatief goede, informatieve en aantrekkelijke poster. Dit zijn de momenten waarop elkaars kwaliteiten worden beproefd, en duidelijk wordt of je aanwezigheid van cruciaal belang is of juist onnodig of vertragende invloed uitoefent op de groep. Naast het (heel hard) werken komt er natuurlijk ook ontspanning aan te pas. Dit gebeurd puur Marokkaans met een heerlijke Marokkaanse maaltijd met een glas thee die rechtstreeks naar je hersenen schiet waardoor je een ware suikershock beleeft met tegelijkertijd een koekje die het werk afmaakt en je meteen genoeg suiker mee geeft om er een week mee vooruit te komen. Het meest verbazingwekkende aan Marokko is toch wel de omgang van de mensen met elkaar, en leven op de straten in de avonden, het islamitische tintje en de karakteristieke maaltijden. Er hangt een zeer prettige sfeer, zowel in het project groep als buiten op de straten en de vele gezellige markten. Over een aantal dagen zullen we afreizen naar Casablanca waar hoogst waarschijnlijk nog vele verrassingen op ons te wachten staan, en die natuurlijk met open armen ontvangen zullen worden.

So this is our forth day in Marocco and everybody is getting quite used to the Maroccan way of how things go around here. Since this is the first day we can sleep past 9 o’clock we all were really fit to start working at the E.M.I.

At least so we thought, because during the day two of the Dutch students went back to the hotel, because they weren’t feeling well. The rest of the students started working on the posters, and although there was a little language barrier, the gathering of the information and the dividing of the tasks went smoothly.

After a long day of working at E.M.I., we finished the day with a nice game of bowling. And it wasn’t a competition, but the Dutch (including Kerusha) did win!

Le premier jour à l’EMI  après les visites qu’on a fait le long de la semaine, nous sommes réunis pour travailler sur les posters. Chaque  groupe doit élaborer un poster  sur  le site duquel il est chargé, c’est même le cas pour notre groupe : le groupe quatre qu’est  constitué De  Sara, Kerusha, Maha, Rajae Et Jacob. Nous sommes chargés du site de Casablanca, le projet du délestage du collecteur ouest (DCO).

Au début, c’était un peu difficile de  définir les idées qui doivent figurer dans le poster, mais grâce à Melle Annelies et Mr Laarabi et après une grande discussion nous avons pu élaborer un plan du poster. Chacun de nous a eu l’occasion de choisir la partie laquelle  il veut détailler, il y avait de problèmes sur ce point.

Après une longue matinée de travail, un très bon couscous a été servi à nos amis à la buvette de l’EMI, or pour les emistes, ils ne pouvaient pas assister à ce déjeuner parce qu’ils avaient un test à passer. Et après le déjeuner et le test on s’est rencontré à la salle pour continuer le travail.

J’aime bien ce qu’on est entrain de faire, c’est une très bonne expérience qui m’a permis de travailler avec des gens  sympathiques et de connaitre des différent cultures.

At the third day in Morocco it was the day of our case. We started the day at ONEP (Office National de l’Eau Potable) in Khemisset. Here we had two presentations about the drink water supply of Morocco and the current problems. While we were listening we enjoyed the lovely Moroccan thee and cookies.

After the presentations we went to a water treatment plant in the region of Khemisset. We had a lovely tour and learned a lot of the way ONEP treats their water. Because it is not only important how the water is treated to become drinking water of good quality, it is also important to see the people who are actually need the water. So to see how ONEP is taking care of the drinking water supply, we went to a little village in a rural area.

It took us half an hour on a bumpy road to get to this village. There we had a warm welcome, all the inhabitants were waiting for us. We talked to them, had a tour around the village and drank thee Moroccan style! It was an amazing experience for all of us.

When we were back in Rabat we supposed to go to the karaoke at T.G.I.F (Thank God It’s Friday’s), unfortunately there was no karaoke this evening. Instead we went to a Moroccan discothèque le Reservoir! Here was a live band playing Arabic songs, we had a lot of fun.

Our first real day in Morocco! And the first excursion is coincidently our assignment, the Sidi Taibi case. At 9 o clock we left our hotel to the visit the ONEP distribution station in Sidi Taibi, in the bus finally got in touch with the Moroccan students. We already met them yesterday, but that day we were very tired and the encounter was quite formal. After a long drive we finally arrived at the site, there we had to wait because the direction of Kenitra was late (we found out that in Morocco this is a not a rarity.) The distribution centre looked quite old on the outside, but on the inside it was actually very modern. We got a short briefing and tour around the site until we left for our next destination, the natural park in Mehdia. This precious natural park is the largest bird sanctuary in North Africa, but sadly its existence is in great jeopardy due to human activities.

Lunch was served in a nice restaurant, we could choose from a considerable range of seafood dishes (very delicious.) Some Moroccan students taught us how to eat with our fingers (another Moroccan custom) which we found very hard considering we normally eat with cutlery. Perhaps after a few days of training we will be an expert at this, saving us a lot of cutlery to wash in Holland.
